I've heard that the Ps3 will have Blu-Ray capibilities, (Since Panisonic released a Blu ray player for about 800$, that does kinda justify the price for a PS3.) metanet/hm.gif
But, I don't really know what Blu-ray is. How is it better than regular DVDs?

Because it's true, and it's nice to repeat the same point to get my message across.

No matter how many times you say it, people are still going to ask the easily answered questions like 'Where can I download soldat?', or 'Whats this about a Halo 3 Tailer?'.

For those too lazy to read the linked article, blu-ray technology employs a higher frequency laser for reading data (as opposed to the standard red laser). This way, more information can be stored on the disks, and they have a larger capacity. I'm guessing blu-ray players will read DVDs, but DVD players surely won't read blu-ray discs.

I saw some blu-ray discs for sale the other day. I can't remember the price, but omg expensive. I'll stick to DVDs for a while.

i think they can hold like 3-4x the amount of data that a normal dvd can...

No, more than that. A dual-layer DVD can store 9.4 GB of data, and a Blu-Ray disc can hold 50 GB. What this means is that game and movie companies can put out very-high-quality video and sound to the consumer. If you have a High-Definition TV, Blu-Ray movies will look better than anything you've seen before.

However, Blu-Ray for the home is stillvery much an "early adopter" technology. You can buy a movie player or a Blu-Ray burner for about $1000 US. If you go with the burner, blank discs cost $20 each, and there's not even any software to play Blu-Ray movies on your computer.

Right now, there's a so-called format war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Whichever one wins is going to replace DVDs as the next generation of media.

Reminds me of the great VHS vs. Beta war. You know how that war ended? Porn ended up on VHS first.

So, before you get a HD DVD or Blu-ray... take a look at your local porn store first.

...it's the next next gen disks that look really exciting - up to 1Tb (1000Gb) on a single disk.

How does it work? I don't know details, but it's something like... normal DVDs use just the top layer of the disk, and are read by lasers. Next-gen disks use every possible layer (I don't know how), and are read by the equivalent of X-rays. If the disk is 1000 layers thick (possible, given how shallow the pits in the disk are), that's the equivallent of 1000 DVDs, in a single disk.

Gosh.
